First, I have to say that I (stupidly?) thought that a table from a company called FURNITURE OF AMERICA would be made in America. Nope. Made in China. Second, and more important, the table is described as "solid wood, wood veneers" and "robust wooden construction" so (duh) I expected a wood table. I guess I should have realized that you don't get a WOOD table this size for $300, regardless of how it is described by the seller. The table base is probably made from some kind of particle board-type "wood" but it is coated with something to make it look like real wood. As we were putting it together I put a tiny scratch on the bottom of one of the legs and the coating came off. I was super careful from that point on not to scratch it because it would be difficult to repair the damage if it was on a part of the table that you can see. When it is assembled you can also see some fairly unattractive bolts on the legs and the piece that connects the two legs. With chairs around the table they are not noticeable but they are still ugly. The table top is probably also made of some type of particle board or other low-grade "wood" but it is coated with laminate or something. It isn't terrible looking, but it is not the WOOD TABLE I thought I was buying. I have tried to be very careful about NOT putting things on the table, but I already have very small, very light marks on it after several weeks during which we only had a few meals on it.I am using this table in a vacation home where I spend 3 or 4 months a year and I have been trying to furnish it without spending a fortune. If I had purchased it for my primary residence I probably would have complained to Amazon and tried to return it but it is adequate for my purposes. FWIW, the one person who visited here since we got the table said he really liked it. Bottom line, though, is that I would not recommend this table. For the amount of money I spent I could have purchased a used table on Craigslist that would have been a better value.I almost never write reviews if I can't give a product 4 or 5 stars. In this case, however, I felt that I needed to post my comments. For most people $300 is a lot of money to spend on something AND this is a large, heavy item that would be difficult, if not impossible, to return.
