I just received the book today. I’m floored by the tapestry Peter Cozzens presents. I’m pretty familiar with Peter but it’s only recently that I discovered he authored this book. I wish I knew of it. I would’ve bought it years ago. It’s a joy to behold. The Civil War was/is Peter’s obsession since his teen years.I’ve never come across another book that makes the conflict come alive as much as this one.Wow! What an inviting book. Especially for someone who sometimes needs to have a “hands on experience” with history in order to better understand just exactly what, where, when & how the battles took place as they unfolded. Remarkable maps, great illustrations. Would recommend this book for all ages who have any level of interest in The Civil War.Purchased as a Christmas gift for friend who is HUGE Civil War buff.He claimed he loved it and found it to be a very thoughtful gift ( as opposed to just a book).He said he found the maps to be very informative and interesting.It is possible that he was only being polite about the gift, but I believe that he truly liked it and found it to be an unusual and thoughtful gift. I did read many reviews before deciding to purchase and it seems CW buffs/historians do like it.So, it you need a gift for a history person , especially CW person, this is a great gift.You will get kudos b/c it is unusual and different.I bought this as a gift for my husband for our first anniversary where the modern gift is 'paper.' It was a big hit as he loved the included maps - it prob helped that he's a civil war geek and likes maps.We purchased this book for my brother and he loved it. The pull out maps and information was a huge success and the savings buying the book at Amazon instead of the catalog where I orginally found the book was a bonus. Thanks Amazon!I'm one whom appreciates history!Very well laid out. Maps, drawings, paintings, and pictures along with short bios of key figures kept this from being dry. Very well done.I am looking forward to taking this with me when I visit the battlefields this summer. The maps are great.
