This book is written as a documented account of the Hungarian Slovak Gypsies in America, not as a novel. Their history was spread out in different publications throughout the world. This book puts it all together and explains their history. My book has won the 2013 USA Best Book Award as a "Finalist" in the "History: United States category and is now up for an International Award. The book is a documented history of Hungarian-Slovak Gypsies that came to America over 120 years ago, they brought to America the traditional Hungarian Gypsy music they and their ancestors played in Europe for hundreds of years. They are directly linked to Europe's finest Gypsy musicians. This book was written to preserve this great Hungarian Gypsy heritage. Throughout time Roma were discriminated against, persecuted and murdered for being Gypsy. Today the decendents of these Roma don't want to be Gypsy anymore and they are now on the verge of losing their heritage and music because of all the racism they face everyday. It is part of world roots music. I have read this book thoroughly and some sections more than once because of my interest in the subject matter. I have personally met some of the people portrayed in the book and I know the author very well. He has gathered many documents, photos and verbal history into one reference book that should help dispel the inaccurate portrayal of these people. The Hungarian-Slovak Gypsies are not fortune-tellers, travelers or the type of Gypsies portrayed in many movies. They are excellent musicians, hard workers, have stable loving families and are still to this day hoping to be treated without prejudice in America and in Europe! Their ancestors came to America to escape the ridicule & torture that they were sometimes subjected to in Europe. This book won a USA Best Book Award ([...]) and Steve Piskor has also released a CD with 23 historical recordings to preserve their music. See [...] for more information about the book and the CD. The Hungarian-Slovak Gypsies tailored their music in response to the people's wishes within the areas that they lived. They used their own musical expertise to perform in many venues over many hundreds of years, playing several different genres of music such as jazz, classical, contemporary, easy listening as well as their own traditional folk songs. I highly recommend the book and the CD for anyone who wishes to learn about and help preserve their heritage & traditions! I've been among many of these people for almost 50 years and I have personally enjoyed being a part of their families by marriage!
