I won't bother to recap this book because my fellow reviewers have already done that. I prefer to offer a recommendation or warning to avoid a given book.In this case, I highly recommend reading this book. It's a great read, backed by fascinating quotes and statistics. It's neither gloomy nor encouraging. It paints a rather dire look at our government and economic condition and offers some observations. The book is not 'preachy'. The book probably won't totally please anyone who lacks a completely open mind. No one and no entity is perfect in this book. There are no victims except ourselves for letting things get the way they are. There are no scared cows. Don't read it to justify what you already believe.Liberals are blamed with conservatives. The teacher's union takes a punch and so does the government for failing our once great system of education. Reagan gets credit for some reform and blame for failures! The whole book is balanced. If you cling to a point of view, you'll hate half of the book.You won't be able to tell which side Luce is on---and that's great.I WANT to make the country a better place and am trying to do so. I don't care about blame. And, I don't believe the government is going to fix any of our problems. I pledge to do what I can.That said, the book inspired me. It should inspire you. If it merely depresses you, get out of the way so those of us who want to make things better, can.Read. Read this book.Chris ReichTeachU.com
