The book is well written by an amazing man who was "ahead of his time" in many areas. He was a great, morally, ethically and skilled caring man, as well as a pediatric surgeon. He was indeed, a beautiful Chirsitan!Tells recent history with an interesting 'insiders' perspective. It also reveals very vividly that being in the limelight often is far from pleasant with much opposition.I was moved most by Koop's integration of his Christian faith into his job as Surgeon General. That he was admired and respected by both conservative and liberal politicians says it all. For example, how he handled the AIDS epidemic. "I'm the Surgeon General of ALL Americans, not just those who conform to my Christian beliefs." His book is a "clinic" for the saying "Hate the sin, but love the sinner." Emulate Koop!I was a young adult when he served under President Reagan and knew little about this great American. As a teacher, I am always looking for well written bios and this will be on the class shelf in September. I was inspired as he explained how his convictions influenced the difficult and unpopular choices he made.As enjoyable to read now as when it was first released. This give insights into the most influential and courageous surgeon general in U.S. history. He explains how he reconciles his religious beliefs and scientific knowledge. This is as important now as when Dr Koop was surgeon general.Fascinating read, from a man who lead the Nation's first responders to the public health needs of entire populations. The seller said it was signed but did not say it was addressed to someone. It would have been nice to know. I wanted to give it to a Dr and was unable to give it when it had someone else's name on it.He is a great writer, this is a great read about a wonderful doctor and man. we will miss him greatly.
