Richard Ketchum has written some of the best books of American history that I ever have read, and this may be the best of all. The period covered is of particular interest to me as it is about the years of my birth and early childhood and I found it eye-opening and encouraging to read of what my parents, as young adults in a world turning inside out, must have experienced and lived through (more optimistically than many, to the great benefit of my siblings and me). Few historians write so well as Mr. Ketchum and none betters him in explaining events. I encourage everyone with an interest in the years critical to the saving of the West to read and enjoy this account.
